Disasters, despite their appalling effects on people bring out the best in them. This is clearly shown in the recent calamity brought in by typhoon Ondoy where individual spontaneously acted to help other people. After three (3) succeeding food distributions, a one-day medical mission was held Sunday, October 25, 2009 at the Brenda Stewart Center in view of several respiratory, digestive and other ailments brought about by the recent calamity that hit the Marikina area and its residents. About one hundred seventy (170) adults and children were treated by the medical team led by Dra. Minda Siasoco (General Medicine), Dra. Joan Soliven (General Medicine), Dr. Oliver Aleman (IM), Dra. Aleman (Pediatrics) and Dra. Lani Lazatin (Pediatrics). They were assisted by nursing students being sponsored by Philippine Diabetes Research and Nutrition Center (PDRNCI), Janet Plotado, Louie Buenaventura, Eloise Pena, Renaluz Mercado, Elaine Pena and Jufe Piquero. As expected, consultations ranged from common colds, cough, fever, muscle pain, feet sores and other skin diseases brought about by long hours of being submerged in the dirty floodwaters and wet clothing that have been dried-up on their bodies. Services includes medical check-up and general consultations for both adult and children. Free medicines were also given for the patients who are mostly at risk of upper respiratory tract infection, urinary tract infection, bronchial asthma, cough and colds, diarrhea, skin disease like athlete’s foot. There are nineteen (19) different kinds of medicines provided for pediatric patients and fourteen different kinds of medicines for adult patients. These are mainly antibiotics and multivitamins. Medicines given to children were; Paracetamol Drops Suspension, Amoxicillin Drops Suspension, Cephalexin Suspension, Ctorimoxazole Suspension, Ambroxol Drops syrup, Chlorphenaminel Cetrizine Syrup, Salbutamol and Guiafenesin Syrup, Magnesium Aluminum Hydroxide Suspension, Multivitamins Drops Syrup, Acid Drops Syrup, Dicycloxerine Syrup, Phenylpropriolamine Drops Syrup – all for pediatrics patients. For adults are Paracetamol, Mefenamic Acid, Celecoxib, Betahistine, Phenylpropanolamine, Lorotadine and Cipsofloxacin. Most of the children treated are already at risk of having respiratory infection and bronchial asthma. For the adults, it was upper respiratory tract infection that got the highest number of patients affected. Other severe diseases were also been able to diagnose like diabetes mellitus in cases of Clarita dela Pena and Vicky Famini. Thankful is Eva Buensuceco who was treated for her developing urinary tract infection and dysuria (hard urination). She acquired said illness during the typhoon Ondoy for being in the water for two consecutive days. However, there are six (6) distinct cases in the medical mission. 1. Francisca dela Cruz, 72 years old is a stroke patient. She also has hypertension (160/90), however, it is fairly controlled. She was given prescribed medicines. 2. Christian Josh Chan, a Purok 7 resident, four (4) years old has an existing cough, cold and fever. He was also diagnosed to have pulmonary tuberculosis going on its fifth month. He also has bouts with asthma. Pneumonia is imminent. He was prescribed with several medicines and was advised to take precautionary measures and no let-up on his medicines. 3. Shaquim Bustamante, eleven (11) months old, has common colds and cough for a week now. It has led to pneumonia. Was prescribed with several paracetamol, antibiotics and multivitamins. Was advised on no let-up with medication. 4. Luisa Felicia, 74 years old, has weight loss, body pains, eye cataract, cough and cold, intermittent fever has been suffering from a sacral pain for 20 years now. Surgery is recommended. 5. Emily dela Cruz, 42 years old, is hypertensive and is a stroke patient. Was prescribed due medicines. 6. Mary Maltu, sixty-one (61) years old, was with chest pain, cough, colds, nasal drips, pneumonia and an acute case of gastritis. Dario Three hundred poor children ages 2 to 9 years old were treated to a day of fun, games and food on Christmas day itself, December 25 at the Brenda Stewart Center in Marikina City, Philippines. These poor kids are victims of Typhoon Ondoy and at the same time beneficiaries of Feed My People International feeding program. Sourced from donations, corporate funds and well-meaning friends and sponsors, the Don Stewart Ministries and Feed My People International were able to pool toy trucks, baby-dolls and other small toy items to give away to these poor children from the community. The anxious and eager-beaver children trooped to the Brenda Stewart Center dressed in their Christmas best. Equally excited were the parents who came with them. Expecting only toys to be given away, their Christmas day was more filled with excitement as they partook of Christmas food prepared for them and a sprinkle of parlor games to make the day! As the children trooped out of the Center, you can see a look of never-ending smiles on their faces – smiles that can never be forgotten on a child’s eyes on Christmas Day.
